Vessels of Remembrance 0

Rooted in both Korean and Japanese cultural traditions, my work draws inspiration from the rich heritage of memorial ceremonies practiced in each culture. A striking memory from the Korean ceremony is the preparation of an abundance of food for the deceased, offered to their spirit. This food is placed on a high pedestal so that the spirit can reach it, and the tops of the fruits are cut to allow the spirit to taste them. Lighting incense signifies the moment of the spirit’s presence.

In my project, the vessels of remembrance consist of several high-footed pieces and ink paintings. These include tower-like stacked vessels and a bird-shaped piece, symbolizing a prayer for the deceased to safely transition to another world. Each piece is adorned with a black glaze, representing mourning in both Japan and Korea.

Remembering the departed is not merely about dwelling on past memories; it also invites reflection on the present. In a world filled with violence, my work seeks to create a meditative space for contemplation and introspection.

私の作品は韓国と日本の両方の文化的伝統に根ざしており、それぞれの文化で実践されている法事の豊かな伝統からインスピレーションを得ています。韓国のチェサで印象に残っているのは、亡くなった人の魂に捧げるためにたくさんの食べ物を用意することです。この食べ物は魂が届くように高い台座の上に置かれ、果物の先端は魂が味わえるように切り取られます。線香を灯すことは、魂がそこに存在することを意味します。

私のプロジェクト「追悼の器」ではいくつかの高台の陶磁器の作品と墨の絵で構成されています。これらには、塔のように積み重ねられた器や鳥の形をした作品が含まれており、亡くなった人があの世に無事に移行できるようにという祈りを象徴しています。各作品は、日本と韓国の両方で喪を表す黒い釉薬が施されています。

亡くなった人を偲ぶことは、過去の記憶にとらわれることだけではありません。現在を振り返ることでみあります。私の作品は、暴力に満ちた世界の中で、熟考と内省のための静謐な瞑想空間を創り出すことを目指しています。

私は韓国と日本の両方の文化で育ち、両方の伝統的な法事の儀式を経験しました。韓国のチェサ（法事）で印象的だったのは、故人のためにたくさんの食べ物を用意し、その霊に捧げることでした。食べ物は霊が届くように高い台座の上に置かれ、線香に火をつけることは、霊が存在することを意味します。

進行中のプロジェクト「Vessels of Remembrance 0」には、いくつかの高台の器と墨の絵で構成されています。積み重ねられた塔のような器、鳥の形をした作品、線香立てなどがあり、いずれも日本と韓国で喪を象徴する黒と白色が施されています。

故人を偲ぶことは、過去の思い出に浸ることだけではなく、現在を振り返り、思索することでもあります。こうした儀式が私たちを失った魂と本当に結びつけるのか、悲しみを和らげるのかを探っています。暴力が蔓延する現代社会において、私は瞑想と内省を誘うような空間作りに深い衝動を感じています。そこでは押し付けられた信念に縛られない、個々人の内なる儀式が見つかることを目指しています。
