You need to go into a space like a mysterious cave to discover what’s “inbetween” its deepest darkest crevices and how it makes you feel.
I once went on a cave trail in Malaysia, my feet in the muddy water. Crawling through the cave in the darkness I suddenly encountered a gigantic creature, the biggest frog ever. It was quietly sitting, doing nothing but I was insanely scared. I walked carefully to avoid him. Why is it that anxiety levels can double or triple in the dark? This memory motivated me to paint the cave. In the cave, I’m scared to go on but there is also this excitement to know what is ahead.
